Summary/Abstract
This chapter, from the book Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), seeks to place carbon capture and storage (CCS) in a legal framework. The chapter commences with an overview of relevant international law and continues with a discussion and analysis of the key provisions of European Directive 2009/31/EC on the geological storage of CO2. The chapter then explores some key issues relating to potential liabilities for CCS related activities, in particular examining the difficult question of allocating long-term, post-closure liabilities. The chapter concludes with an analysis of some of the key future challenges for regulatory systems and for CCS more generally.
