Summary/Abstract

Adopted on January 1st, 2019, the protocol allows transportation fuels whose lifecycle emissions have been reduced through CCS or direct air capture to become eligible for credits under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard. The Carbon Capture and Sequestration Protocol of California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard applies to CCS projects that capture carbon dioxide and sequester it onshore, in either saline or depleted oil and gas reservoirs, or oil and gas reservoirs used for CO2-enhanced oil recovery. The CCS Protocol applies to both new and existing CCS projects, provided the projects meet the requirements for permanence pursuant to section C (Permanence Certification) of this protocol. In addition, direct air capture projects may apply for CCS Permanence Certification regardless of location, and do not need to have a fuel component to be issued credits.
